Mark Gimkit as 'Trusted' in Google Workspace for Education

This article goes over Google Workspace for Education policy changes that may affect your students' ability to access Gimkit using school-administered Google credentials after October 23, 2023.

Google Workspace’s changes will only affect you if your school or district uses Google Single Sign-On (SSO) for student logins for Gimkit and your students are under 18.

To avoid interruptions for students who match the above requirements, a Google Workspace for Education administrator needs to mark Gimkit as trusted inside of Google Workspace for Education.

Your Google Workspace for Education administrator can review Google’s guidance on how to confirm third-party settings here. And here’s a quick step-by-step guide:

Log in to your Google Workspace for Education admin account
Navigate to the Admin console and click on 'Security'
From the Security menu, select 'Access and Data Control'
Then, select 'API Controls'
Under 'App access control', click on 'Manage third-party access'
Click on 'View list' under the 'Accessed Apps' section
Google Workspace - View List
In the list of accessed apps, look for 'Gimkit'
Select Gimkit and click on 'Change access'
Google Workspace - Change Access
Follow the steps and mark Gimkit as 'Trusted'
Google Workspace - Mark as Trusted
At the end of the required steps, select 'Change access' to save
Google Workspace - Save

After your admin has completed the above, they will have successfully added Gimkit as a trusted app and can ensure uninterrupted access for all your Google Workspace for Education users.

As a reminder, accounts in Gimkit are optional — students can join live games and assignments without creating accounts or logging in. Even if your school or district hasn’t yet marked Gimkit as ‘trusted’, your students can still play Gimkit without logging in.

What happens if I do nothing?

Starting October 23, 2023, users designated as under 18 won't be able to sign in to Gimkit using their school-administered Google credentials (Google SSO).

As always, accounts in Gimkit are optional for students — they can join live games and assignments without logging in.

What if my school doesn’t use Google?

Nothing is changing for those who do not use Google Workspace for Education and Google SSO with Gimkit, as well as students who play Gimkit without accounts.

Are my students going to lose access to Gimkit because of Google's change?

You and your students are not losing access to Gimkit. If you are a teacher and you or your students cannot log into Gimkit with your school-administered Google credentials, you can click the “forgot password” link to create a password and bypass Google SSO.

We also recommend that you contact your school or district administrators to let them know that Gimkit is critical to your instruction and should be added as a trusted app.

How do I know if my district or school has identified Gimkit as 'trusted'?

You can contact your Google Workspace for Education admin and ask if Gimkit has a trusted status. Unfortunately, Gimkit cannot verify your privacy settings in Google Workspace for Education. If after October 23, 2023, your students cannot log into Gimkit with their school-administered Google credentials, contact your IT department and ask about marking Gimkit as trusted.

Does Gimkit meet my state and district's requirements for student data privacy and data protection?

Gimkit takes data privacy and security seriously. We adhere to federal safety and privacy legislation such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), and more. We meet or exceed data privacy compliance for some of the most privacy-aware states, including CA, TX, GA, NC, and NY.

Read Gimkit’s privacy policy here and contact us anytime with privacy questions at privacy@gimkit.com.

What if my school or district does not mark Gimkit as 'trusted'?

You will still be able to use Gimkit, but your students will not be able to sign in using Google SSO. They can still use their email address and password to login to Gimkit, but if they haven’t already, they’ll need to click the “forgot password” link to create a password and bypass Google SSO.

If your school or district will not mark Gimkit as trusted because of student data and privacy concerns, we can help! Gimkit reviews and responds to all school and district-level data privacy and security requests. If we can meet your specific requirements, we will!

Your IT department or another administrator can reach out to privacy@gimkit.com to ask about getting state and district-specific signed DPA and SDPAs. We meet or exceed data privacy compliance for some of the most privacy-aware states, including CA, TX, GA, NC, and NY.
